Who it helps

  • PEP families who want a certified teacher for one subject
  • Parents who feel unsure about teaching reading or writing
  • Children who are behind in reading and need structured lessons
  • Families who want clear progress notes for their Student Learning Plan
  • Kids who learn better when someone other than a parent teaches a subject
  • Families who want sessions that fit around their homeschool week

How it works

From our first call to your first progress review, here is what to expect.

  1. Free 15-minute fit call

We talk about your homeschool, your curriculum, and where you want help.

  2. Baseline sessions

In the first one or two sessions, I use short educational skill checks and observation to see where to start. This is not a clinical evaluation.

  3. Goals that fit your plan

We set two or three learning goals that line up with your curriculum and your Student Learning Plan.

  4. Steady weekly sessions

One to three sessions a week, in person or online, on the subjects you choose.

  5. Four-week progress review

Every four weeks I share what has improved and what is next. You also get a short note each month to keep with your homeschool records.

What a session looks like

One 60-minute session
  1. Check in and set a goal 5 min
  2. Review 10 min
  3. Explicit instruction 25 min
  4. Supported practice and strategy use 15 min
  5. Reflect and share next steps 5 min

The 25 minutes of explicit teaching are the heart of it.

You lead, I support

In a parent-directed homeschool, you choose the curriculum and set the direction. I teach inside your plan and give you clear information to make decisions with.

Parent in charge
You decide what your child studies. I suggest, explain, and teach, but I never take over your program.
Structured lessons
Reading and writing lessons follow a clear, Orton-Gillingham-informed sequence, so skills build week to week.
Records you can use
Monthly progress notes and four-week reviews are written in plain language, ready for your files.
Flexible scheduling
Sessions fit around your homeschool week, one to three times a week, in person or online.

How tutoring fits inside your homeschool

Tutoring fills one piece of your homeschool, not the whole thing. You keep teaching the subjects you enjoy, and I take on the ones where you want a certified teacher’s help, most often reading and writing.

I call this service my Homeschool Learning Lab. Each session follows the same calm structure, with direct teaching, guided practice, and a short wrap-up you can build on at home.

Some families choose one or two sessions a week for reading. Others add a session for writing or study skills. We start with what matters most and adjust after the first progress review.

After each session, I share a short practice idea you can use at home. That way, what your child learns with me shows up in the rest of your homeschool week.

Student Learning Plan support

PEP families submit a Student Learning Plan each year, and I can help you fill in the reading and writing parts with clear goals. You write and submit the plan, and my baseline and goals give you concrete details to draw from.

PEP rules that shape your learning plan

Who qualifies for PEP The Personalized Education Program (PEP) is for K-12 students who are not enrolled full time in a public or private school. Students must be at least 5 years old by September 1, and families of any income level can apply. Families submit a Student Learning Plan each year, and the student takes a state-approved norm-referenced test (students with special needs may be exempt). PEP program fact sheet (PDF)

Good plan goals are specific, such as “reads two-syllable words with short vowels” instead of “gets better at reading.” For a step-by-step walkthrough, read the PEP Student Learning Plan, walked through by a teacher.

Progress before the annual test

PEP students take a state-approved norm-referenced test each year, with some exemptions for students with special needs. Steady progress through the year is the calmest way to prepare. My monthly notes and four-week reviews show where your child stands long before test time.

I teach the reading and writing skills the test measures, not test tricks. If you want, we can look at test-style questions a few weeks ahead, so the format feels familiar.

Step Up’s PEP purchasing guide also says fees for standardized tests, including norm-referenced tests, are eligible expenses.

You stay in charge of curriculum

You choose the curriculum, the pace, and the priorities. I teach within your plan and tell you honestly what I see, but the decisions are yours.

If a program and your child’s needs do not match, I will say so and explain why. You decide what to change, if anything.

If you are shopping for curriculum, note that curriculum must be a complete course of study, and curriculum that is not publicly available needs pre-authorization.

Scheduling around your homeschool week

Sessions are 60 minutes, one to three times a week. I teach in person within about 30 minutes of Lake Worth Beach and online anywhere in Florida.

Daytime weekday sessions are available for homeschool families, usually Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 am to 3 pm, and other weekday times when my schedule allows. We can change the schedule at any four-week review as your year shifts.

Paying with PEP or a Unique Abilities Scholarship

Families with a PEP account or a Unique Abilities Scholarship can often pay me directly through the Education Market Assistant (EMA). You reserve funds in EMA, and Step Up pays me after each session.

The rate is the same whether you pay through Step Up or privately. There are no discounts or extras tied to how you pay.

PEP applications for 2026-27 closed April 30, 2026. If you are planning ahead, you can join Step Up's 2027-28 scholarship updates list and read the PEP scholarship guide.

Questions parents ask

Will you choose our curriculum?

No. You stay in charge of your curriculum and your homeschool plan. I teach inside it, and if you ask, I can explain what to look for in a reading or writing program.

Can you help with our Student Learning Plan?

Yes. I can help you put reading and writing goals into clear, measurable words. You write and submit the plan, and my baseline and progress notes give you details to draw from.

The PEP Student Learning Plan, walked through

Can PEP pay for tutoring?

According to Step Up, FES-UA and PEP can pay for part-time tutoring, and they are the only scholarships that pay for full-time private tutoring. As an approved Step Up For Students provider, I bill PEP accounts directly through EMA. The rate is the same as private pay.

PEP scholarship guide

How does tutoring help before the annual test?

Steady skill work through the year is usually more useful than last-minute test prep. I teach the reading and writing skills underneath the test, not test tricks. Monthly notes help you see progress well before test day.

How flexible is scheduling?

Sessions run one to three times a week, in person or online, and we can adjust the schedule at each four-week review. My current hours are Weekdays 9 am to 3:30 pm. Weekends by arrangement.. We find a time that fits your homeschool week on the fit call.

Do you work with homeschool families who are not on PEP?

Yes. Families who pay privately are welcome, and so are FES-UA families who homeschool. The structure, goals, and progress notes are the same for every family.
